Infrastructure
Infrastructure expansion is another way to attract businesses and stimulate our economic growth. Houston's existing infrastructure is strong but there are many ways in which it can be improved. There needs to be continued road repair, while remaining mindful of future expansion needs. Additionally, coordinated traffic lights would relieve traffic congestion during peak commuting hours.
Houston continues to experience flood control problems. Some areas are at increased risk of flood during heavy rains due to poor drainage, causing danger for our citizens. Although efforts have been made to address the city's flood control and drainage infrastructure needs, there still remains a need to further explore these issues with engineers and provide a viable solution to the problem.
Zoning
Houston is the largest city in America without a formal zoning code and this presents many challenges. There are neighborhoods with a $200,000 home on one side of the street and a $25,000 home on the other. Unfortunately, some of these homes have been grandfathered in, but this will not deter us from encouraging investors and home owners to improve their homes. We will work with real estate developers and encourage them to invest in these poorly constructed neighborhoods, giving the residents and their neighbors a better lifestyle.
Public Transportation
Houston is a vivid and vibrant city. However, as the fourth largest city in the nation it does not have an efficient public transportation system. We need to continue to focus on expansion of the METRORail, extending it from downtown to the furthest most parts of the metropolitan area. We will work hard to ensure this goal is accomplished. As part of this focus, we will work to sync the METRORail schedule with that of the METRO buses, ensuring a bus is available for our citizens upon exiting Rail.
Environment
By decreasing highway congestion and extending the METRORail, release of harmful carbon monoxide into our atmosphere will be reduced. Cleaner energy resources, such as wind turbines, also need to be implemented. Wind turbines are cost effective, pollution free and a natural way of obtaining energy. We also need to expand our recycling abilities, which will not only improve the environment in Houston, but in our nation as a whole. |
